Panic disorder is a form of anxiety disorder which is characterised by regular and sometimes unexpected panic attacks. They usually last between 5 and 20 minutes in duration and can involve feelings of intense fear accompanied by a wide range of physical symptoms. Due to the intensity and regularity of panic attacks some people can feel like they lose control of how they feel. This can cause a person to feel like they are living in fear and it may also lead to them developing certain phobias such as agoraphobia (avoiding situations where you are afraid you may panic). As a result the condition can have a significant impact on a person’s mental health and quality of life.

People with panic disorder may also have feelings of anxiety in addition to the panic attacks, and often find that if their stress levels go up, they are more prone to experiencing an anxiety attack. Panic attack symptoms

Symptoms of a panic attack can occur at any time, and sometimes even happen when a person is sleeping. Although symptoms vary greatly from person to person, the most common symptoms are:

  • Breathing changes: when the nervous system is in a state of panic breathing can become restricted and difficult. This may manifest through hyperventilation (very fast breathing). One of the most distressing aspects of a panic attack is when you feel you are not getting in enough air, which only compounds the panic.
  • Racing heartbeat : Due to the adrenaline and cortisol flooding through the body during a panic attack the heart can beat very rapidly, you may feel like your heart is going to explode out of your chest or it beats so loud you can feel it in your ears. For some people they also develop an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) which can also cause distress. 
  • Chest pain: pain in and around the chest can be mild to severe and cause distress.
  • Tingling in hands or feet: When combined with breathing difficulties and a rapid heartbeat, tingling in the hands and feet can mimic the symptoms of the much more serious condition of a heart attack. We recommend anyone who does experience this to be checked out by a health professional before we start any work together.
  • Excessive sweating: when a part of the brain known as the amygdala is detecting a threat, the result of the chemicals that gets released into the body is sweating. This can be embarrassing if to an extreme level.
