Common causes of low self-esteem.
Body Image: when you look at yourself in the mirror what words, phrases or questions come to mind about the way you look? If you are not happy with the way your body looks, you may not feel like you are comfortable speaking to people, having the limelight on you, or wearing certain clothes or outfits you would otherwise enjoy. Body image issues can affect anyone from teenagers to the elderly, and can affect both men and women equally. As we hear those voices of criticism and disapproval, this leads to chemical reaction in the brain that produces the chemicals that make us feel the way that matches our thoughts. Resulting in feeling not good enough or not enough. Many times our internal voice is harsher than anything else another person could say.
Negative company: The environment we surround ourselves in has a massive impact on how we think and feel. If you are in a group or with a partner who has low self-esteem, this can rub off on you and lead you to allowing your self-esteem to plummet. When you are around other people with low self-esteem, they can sometimes lash out. This is often to hide their own hurt but your self-esteem can still take a hit from hearing hurtful words or phrases. People with high self-esteem know that the people you spend the most time with will have the greatest impact on you, so surrounding yourself with happy, positive people can make all the difference.
Relationship with caregivers growing up: The way our parents feel about themselves and their life when we are young will influence how we feel and how we develop our self-esteem. Parents with low self-esteem can often inadvertently teach these negative thought patterns and beliefs to their young children, who lack the mental filters and life experience to know what is happening. These beliefs take a free ride into our unconscious where they sit and take root, until they are upgraded. Abuse: Anyone who has been mentally, physically or sexually abused can often have low self-esteem. Traumatic events when young can lead us to making certain meanings about ourselves and the world around us. Unless these issues are addressed and resolved, feelings of low self-esteem can develop into depression or other serious issues such as suicide.
Setting unrealistic goals: If you have a goal in mind, but either lack the knowledge of how to get there, as in you have no road map, or your targets are too vague, not measurable, or you set unrealistic time limits, this can lead to low self-esteem. Learning how to make SMART goals and building a road map of how to get there, as well as by taking feedback along the way can change the way you view yourself.
